David Graham qualified as a veterinary surgeon from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1988. Following a year working in UCD as a house surgeon he spent several years in mixed general practice in Northern Ireland before joining the laboratories of the Veterinary Sciences Division of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (now part of the Agri-food and Biosciences Institute [AFBI]). During his time there he gained extensive experience in the diagnosis and control of infectious diseases across a wide range of species including cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and fish. He was awarded a PhD in 1998 from Queen’s University Belfast on Improved Serological Diagnosis of Bovine Respiratory Disease. During this period his two main research interests were bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) and salmonid alphaviruses, publishing extensive on these and other areas. He was also responsible for establishing the AFBI Cattle Health Scheme for BVD, IBR, Johne’s disease and leptospirosis.

In 2010 he joined Animal Health Ireland (, a not for profit private-public organisation tasked with pursuing effective control strategies for economically important diseases of livestock which are not subject to international regulation and seeking to contribute to a profitable and sustainable farming and agri-food sector through improved animal health. He is currently deputy CEO and programme manager for biosecure diseases. A key role of this post to date has been the development and management of an industry-led national BVD eradication programme.
