Biography

Tom Brownlie, BVetMed, PhD, MANZCVSc (Epidemiology), MRCVS

Tom graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2002 and worked in large animal practice in the English West Country for several years before emigrating to New Zealand to find more cattle, locum work and a large animal teaching residency at Massey University.

He started his Masters at the Epicentre at Massey University but during this course found an opportunity with Cognosco, a private research group, to manage the New Zealand National Herd Fertility Study as his PhD. This was a, large scale, multi-year randomised controlled study examining the multifactorial effects of farmer participation in extension programmes on their herds’ reproductive performance. He continued to expand the research from this platform and the current focus of his work is cow survivability, epidemiology of dairy herd health and heifer growth in New Zealand dairy herds.
He is currently building veterinary specific software tools to assist practices access national dairy data and generate more value from farm information.
